Proverbs is a book known for its applicable wisdom. Written by Solomon, the son of David and the third king of Israel. The Lord told Solomon that He would give him anything that He asked for. Instead of asking for riches, power, or anything of these sorts, Solomon asked for wisdom and the Lord greatly blessed him with such. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs so for the next 31 days of May we’re going to take a look at the wisdom in each one.
Chapter Eight: Wisdom is priceless.
One important thing to remember about wisdom it is priceless. It is not something you can buy, yet its worth more than most things in life.
“On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense.”(v.2-3, 5)
Wisdom is not hidden. Anyone can gain wisdom. Those who lack understanding and knowledge should ask for wisdom. The Lord wants to give us wisdom and He has shown us how to receive it, but it is our job to find it. It’s right there after all.
“for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. They are all straight to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.”(v.7-11)
The Word of the Lord is wisdom. He has given us an entire book of His wisdom for the best way to live this life. Even an entire section, which we are studying right now, dedicated to the character of wisdom and how to get it! It is not something to be taken lightly, rather it is a beautiful gift! We should cherish the knowledge and wisdom that God gives us. Without wisdom we could end up with all of the riches possible in this life and still be miserable. Wisdom shows us how to treat others, the Lord, the planet, and even ourselves. Wisdom brings a sense of joy, peace, and security that one would not experience otherwise.
“I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver. I walk in the way of righteousness, in the paths of justice, granting an inheritance to those who love me, and filling their treasuries.”(v.17-21)
Wisdom is gained on purpose through the diligent hunt to be wise. We should look for situations where we can practice our wisdom. We should use wisdom for everything, making our decisions through the knowledge and understanding the Lord has give us. Those who seek wisdom like this will find it and they will be blessed. The fruit of wisdom is a good, healthy, and long life.
“The Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, then I was beside him, like a master workman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always,”(v.22-23, 27, 30)
The wisdom of the Lord was there with Him even in the beginning of creation. God used wisdom to create something out of nothing. Everything He did for this world, the way He created every little thing, and especially us humans, is a work of wisdom. Since the whole created order is founded on God’s wisdom, to go against His wisdom would be to go against all of creation. He created us, male and female, carefully making each unique in different ways. He created humans to rule over animals. Everything He does is intentional and done with wisdom.
“And now, O sons, listen to me: blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.”(v.32-36)
We should give attention to wisdom and hear the word of God and it will bring many blessings our way. The two incomparable gifts that wisdom brings are eternal life and favor with God. Wisdom isn’t gain through the sheer hope of receiving it but found by those who inconvenience themselves to find her by waiting and watching, and sacrificing a life lived like a fool.
