Proverbs 7

Proverbs is a book known for its applicable wisdom. Written by Solomon, the son of David and the third king of Israel. The Lord told Solomon that He would give him anything that He asked for. Instead of asking for riches, power, or anything of these sorts, Solomon asked for wisdom and the Lord greatly blessed him with such. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs so for the next 31 days of May we’re going to take a look at the wisdom in each one.

Chapter 7: Warning against the adulteress
This chapter focuses on the adulteress. But honestly, you can abide by any temptation or sin that you personally struggle with. The message is still the same: the way of sin always leads to death.

“My son, keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart”(v.1-3)

Firstly, in order to avoid the way of (insert the sin you struggle with) you must know the commandments of God concerning that thing. Keeping of the commandments begins with knowing, treasuring, and meditating on them. There should be a tight knit relationship between ourselves and Gods word. We should live it and want to know more about it. Reading and studying the word and knowing the commandments of God isn’t just for your pastor. You should have a personal relationship outside of the church, outside of your spouse, outside of your parents, outside of anyone but you. You and God must spend time together! This will allow you to not only know the commandments but grow to love them and abide by them.

“and I have seen among the simple, I have perceived among the youths, a young man lacking sense, passing along the street near her corner, taking the road to her house And behold, the woman meets him, dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart. She is loud and wayward; her feet do not stay at home; now in the street, now in the market, and at every corner she lies in wait. With much seductive speech she persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him. All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast till an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life.”(v.7‬-‭8‬, ‭10‬-‭12‬, ‭21‬-‭23‬)

The simple ones is a term used in the KJV for a person or group of people who are inexperienced and gullible. This would be someone who is not well-trained in the word of God. He/she has no understanding, lacks sense, therefore so easily falls into the snare of sin and wickedness.

Sometimes sin stands out to you and you are able to recognize it and stay away from it. In our world today evil isn’t hiding anymore, like this woman who waits at every corner ready to drag anyone she can to hell. The sin will be stubborn and persistent, temptation will come and won’t let up as soon as you wish it would. The woman does not stay at home and neither does sin. It’s not always going to be where you expect to find it. I’m sure there are places where you expect to find sin. But it can be found anywhere, and will be found everywhere. Sin is often going to look good. The enemy tempts us well because he knows our ugly desires and our weaknesses. He knows how best to get our attention so that the sin will look enticing.

Once the person gives into sin that is when the consequences come. Satan will not share the cost of sin until after you buy into it. Son is going to look really good and then after comes the guilt, shame, and the unfortunate consequences. We get to choose if we will give in and be that ox going to the slaughter. One said, “Human beings are the only creatures in God’s creation who can choose which creature they want to be. God wants us to be sheep.”
