Take the chance

“And let us not be weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

Galatians 6:9-10

Lately I’ve been processing what it means to do good in all things. Not just simply to be a good person, but truly living like Jesus in every single thing we do.

Be completely immersed.

To be baptized means to be immersed, completely covered. Mark 1:8 says, “I (John the Baptist) have baptized you with water, be he will baptize you with the Holy Ghost.” When we think baptism, most of us probably think of being covered in water and coming up brand new, which represents a cleansing of our body, heart, and soul. But this verse speaks of baptism of the Holy Spirit. To truly know Christ, we must be baptized by the Spirit. This is to be completely immersed by the goodness, the holiness, and the grace of God. To be immersed by the Spirit is to be completely covered from head to toe, side to side, top to bottom, and all around with Jesus. Our lives should radiate with His light. Verse 25 of Galatians chapter 5 says, “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” In our old lives, before we knew Christ, everything turned wretched and stained because of our sinfulness. But now, with the blood of Christ cleansing us from every impurity, we can bring light to even the darkest parts of the world.

When people notice you do they see Jesus?

We may not always realize it, but those around us, family, friends, even the strangers on the street, notice what we do. They notice how we talk. They notice how we react. They notice how we treat others. When people notice you do they see Jesus? It’s a convicting question but an important one, nonetheless. I have been asking myself this question every day as I’m living to be the hands and feet of Jesus. I encourage you to ask yourself this as well. We’re called to be Ambassadors, remember? 2 Corinthians 5:20 says, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” We are representatives from our homeland (heaven), here on earth to represent who we serve (the Lord Yahweh). Can people tell a difference when they talk to you and when they talk to someone who doesn’t know Jesus? Can they tell there is something different about you? Something lively? Something righteous? It’s important that we check the posture of our heart and the position of our priorities often. Is what we’re doing at any given moment more important than our work for the Lord? Do we take the time to notice those around us? To care enough about those in our lives to share the love of Christ?

Do the good thing.

These verses command us to do good in all things, to all people, at all times. Jesus lived His life in constant goodness. He always served those around Him, He was kind and compassionate. He loved others with a love that was unconditional. We should seek the same goals for our lives. If you see the chance to do something good, take that chance.  Here are a few ways I try and show Jesus in the small things, this is not a to-do list or even specific commands in the bible, but I’ve found that they show people that you care. It’s important for evangelism because people won’t care what you know, until they know that you care. The following are things I try to integrate into my daily life:

  • Cleaning up the table after eating out at a restaurant
  • Looking people in the eyes when they’re speaking to you, as well as being engaged in conversations
  • Saying ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’
  • Being patient with those who are struggling, such as employees when things are out of their control or people who have a problem with you
  • Ask people how they are doing and stick around to hear their answer
  • Lend a helping hand to someone struggling at the grocery store or elsewhere out in public

I’ve found that acting like Jesus in situations like these can deescalate stressful situations, leave you feeling better, and leave others with more joy and satisfaction as well. Maybe there are simple yet mighty things you enjoy doing that share Jesus’ love with the world. Do those things more often. We should seek to show kindness to everyone, like verse 10 says. If you see an opportunity to do good, don’t miss out on that. You could end up leading someone to Jesus because of that ‘simple’ act or encouraging a brother or sister in Christ.

You will reap what you sow.

Galatians 6:7 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that he shall also reap.” When we are doing good things for others, speaking life and not death, and being compassionate, we will receive goodness and compassion in return. Jesus says, “What you have done unto the least of these, ye have done it unto me.” What we do for others is as if we are doing it for Jesus. True worship is helping those in need and sharing His good news with the world. I believe the greatest gift I will ever receive will be these words from Jesus: “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” I hope that I will live my life in such a way that I get to Him and He says those words. I hope that I am humble enough to know that it is not me doing these good things but the work of the Lord in my life. I hope that when I get to the end of my life there will not be trophies on display or monuments in my name, but there will be a little lighter in the unexpected alleys of this world, all for His glory. Well doing reaps a well reward.

Father, I pray that I would do right by you by doing right by others. Show me how I can help my brothers and sisters in Christ, and those who are not of the faith. Help me to sow of the Spirit and not of my flesh. Make me aware of the opportunities around me to do good to others and bear a loving, positive witness of Christ to the world. Amen.
