Last week we got to see Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life. He breaks every chain that bounds us and calls us out of the grave! This week we get to look at Jesus in a similar way.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

John 14:6

We can break this statement down in four ways: Jesus is the way, Jesus is the truth, Jesus is the life, and Jesus is the only One who can bridge the gap between ourselves and God.

Jesus is the Way

In Jesus’ times, following ‘the way’ meant trying to live by God’s standards. Moses was given rule after rule, ritual after ritual in the Old Testament by God himself on what exactly the Israelites needed to do to become clean and stay that way. If you read the book of Leviticus, it is easy to get overwhelmed by them all. You may even think, ‘It would be impossible to follow all of those rules and laws at all times.’ And you would be correct. The Israelites failed numerously, just as we do today.

So, if there is a way that must be followed, for us to gain access to heaven and eternal life, yet it is impossible for us to abide by on our own, what do we do? Thankfully, we serve a very gracious and merciful God who looked at mankind, in our broken and fallen state, and said that He still wanted fellowship with us. Therefore, He sent His One and only Son, Jesus Christ to give His life as a sacrifice for us. Jesus is that way. We must live by His example. There are still some commandments we follow from the Old Testament, such as the famous, ‘Ten Commandments,’ or that one about how we are to love the Lord our God, with all our heart, all our soul, and all our strength. Now instead of trying to live up to God’s expectations to earn salvation and heaven, we surrender our heart to Jesus and in doing so we will want to live our lives such as He did.

Jesus is the Truth

Our society has an incredibly corrupt view of ‘truth.’ Today, we hear so much talk about ‘my truth’ or ‘your truth.’ But unfortunately, this is a paradox because ‘your truth’ and ‘my truth’ can contradict one another. How, then, do we decide what really is true? Let me give an example. Say there is a cake sitting on the kitchen table. I say that it is a chocolate cake. You say that it is a vanilla cake. But the cake is coconut! When I declare that the cake is chocolate, it does not make it chocolate just because I say that it is. To say that a coconut cake is chocolate would not be reality. When we decide to take reality and begin to see only what we want to chaos ensues.

Jesus tells us that He is the truth. Truth is absolute, therefore everything Christ says is absolute. It is so reassuring that there is one thing, or rather one being that we can depend on completely to be that truth. We can look to the word of God and know that Jesus truly died on the cross and rose again, we can know that He gives us peace that passes all understanding, we can know that He will fight for us, and so much more. We don’t have to doubt that what He says isn’t true or factual because He is the truth. Paul talks about how we should wear the belt of truth and that means that everything we say, think, and do needs to be done in truth. It is our foundation, the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the life

Last week we also talked about Jesus as the life. Before Jesus we are not truly living. But I can speak from experience and say that when you do accept Him as Lord of your life, you invite life in. You are no longer dead but alive! I think in my own life I forget that the Spirit of the living God is dwelling within me and giving me this life. To tie in this point with the previous, John 3:21 says, “But he that does truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

Jesus is the only way to the Father

As we have discussed before, we want to have a relationship with God. But it is not possible because of the gap that sin creates between us and Him. Jesus is that bridge that allows us to find ourselves in fellowship with God that we might know Him and be near Him. Without Jesus this isn’t possible and there is absolutely nothing that we can do on our own to get to heaven or to know God. There are many who will say that you can follow this or that and receive eternal life or perfection, but those things are simply untrue. The one and only way to heaven and eternal life is Jesus Christ.

I know it feels like we went back to the basics this week, but it is important we do not let ourselves get away from those founding principles of our faith. When we do, we are not serving Jesus. We should always seek Him every minute of every day.
