True Peace

The world gives us a false definition of peace. Society says that peace is freedom from disturbance or the absence of chaos or calamity. But I believe that the bible describes peace differently. Philippians 4:7 says, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ.” True peace, peace that comes from God, is possible despite the circumstances that ail us. In my own life I have experienced peace despite what was going on around me. It is possible but finding this peace is only found in trusting Jesus and looking to Him despite the waves crashing down around you. John 16:33 says, “These things I have spoken to you so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation but take courage; I have overcome the world.” Jesus never promised that we would not go through life without adversity, but He did promise to be our peace in the midst of all of our struggles.

There are 4 important things for us to remember about peace:

Jesus is the prince of peace

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

In the old testament, the prophet Isaiah prophesied that a Son would be born, and He would be the Savior of the world. Many of the children of Israel thought Jesus would come as a mighty warrior, overthrowing the government, destroying all of Israel’s enemies, etc. Yet Christ arrived in the humblest way with the most peaceful agenda. He was not looking for a fight or war. He was not coming as the type of King that would live in a huge palace, everything wrapped in gold, while He looked down on everyone else. Jesus came to bring peace to troubled hearts.

God is the author of peace.

“For God is not a God of confusion, but of peace…” I Corinthians 14:33

God supplies peace. He is peace. If you are feeling anxious, troubled, or uneasy, that is not from God. He will not leave you feeling this way. When we are feeling those anxious or troubled feelings, that is when we must turn to God so that He can fill us with His peace. Paul writes in Philippians that the peace of God will guard our hearts. Despite what negative or anxious emotions try to make their way into our hearts, God will protect us from it. In the way that God is the author of peace, you cannot find peace apart from Him. There are many things we turn to in an attempt to bring us peace, but this doesn’t last long. Even good things that seem peaceful like relaxing on the beach or taking a nice drive. They may feel peaceful, but those relaxing times will not bring you peace.

Peace from Jesus is perfect.

“You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed of you: because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3

The peace that Jesus gives is not a halfway peace. You will be able to feel His peace all of the time. It is not a peace that leaves you wondering, guessing, scared, or worried. It is not a false sense of peace that only lasts for a time. It does not have to be earned, and no one can take that peace away from you.

God’s peace is incomprehensible. It grounds us and protects us.

“And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

If you’ve ever experienced the peace of God, you can understand personally what this means. This peace that God gives makes no sense to the human mind, we truly could never be able to understand His peace. I think that is such a beautiful thing that simply adds to the peace. It isn’t up to us to figure this peace out or make sense of it, it’s in God’s hands. In my life there have been moments where I desperately needed to feel at peace and when I asked God to supply this peace for me, He so graciously did to a point where I was struggling to grasp how I was feeling peace at all. Not only is God’s peace incomprehensible, but it protects us from the things of this world seeking to hurt us. Fear and anxiety have no hold on me or place in my life because God is my peace.

In a world as chaotic as the one we are living in; we need the peace of God more than ever. The best way I am able to explain God’s peace, in a deeply personal way, is like driving under a bridge in the rain. You know what I mean, you’ve been driving for hours and it’s still pouring, the rain just won’t stop. Then you drive under one of those huge bridges that tower over roads and buildings. All of a sudden, for a moment, the rain stops. There are no huge raindrops beating on the side of the car, no thunder startling you as you drive. It’s just silent. It doesn’t quite make sense because it’s still raining everywhere else. But inside of that car, you are protected from the storms. In my storms, God has been that bridge for me. Shielding me from the rain, hiding me from the lightning and the thunder. Peace is not a guarantee that we won’t walk through storms, but certainty that in the midst of all the rain God will be our bridge. There is no true peace apart from God.

Peace is not a guarantee that we won’t walk through storms, but certainty that in the midst of all the rain God will be our bridge.
